Overview
Matiatia Main Carpark is the biggest carpark On Waiheke Island, it has places for 15min free parking, drop off only zones, lots of disability parking, motorbike parking, bus parking zone, well two bus parking zones and even a taxi stand. In this post I will go over all the key features and zones.
Note: All the parking in the Matiatia Carparks requires your car or bike to have registration and Wof if applicable. In cases were you have a 50cc scooter than only has a registration, Wof is not needed.
All The Carpark Sections
Starting from the top of the main carpark.
Section A) Is a gravel section that is for permit holders only, this will be people such as bus drivers and workers etc.
Section B) Is a continuation of that gravel section that many rental car companies seem to be parked at, I think this section is dedicated for rental cars.
Section C) Is Just down from the last section it has many gravel parks with paid parking $3.50 24 hours with a 24 hour limit, this is about 4min walk to the boat.
Section D) Is to the side of section C you have a open section that buses park up when in waiting or between shifts etc.
Section E) Is the main car parking section, it has 100 plus parks and they all cost $3.50 for 24 hours. Some of the parks are off to the side on gravel or under trees, this parking section also has a bike section.
Section F) Is the lower section, it has maybe 50 carparks that cost $6.50 for 24 hours, this section has two bike sections, A taxi stand and Also 20 disability parks. Plus some 15 min and 30 min parking, perfect for picking up people without a huge time crunch.
Section G) Is a boat only section, you can launch your boat here and leave your car parked with trailer. It only holds about 4-5 Vehicles + Trailer so it might not always be available.
Section H) Is 2min parking and drop off only parking.
Section I) Is for Buses and Tour buses/vans that have approval. Or emergency ambulance drop-off.
Section J) Is for Mooring holders.
Section K) is just all roadside street parking, that is still $3.50 24 hours and spans up about 800metres of road. With one small section being 6 hours max and different rates.
Common Questions
Q) I want to pick someone up from the fullers boat, what is the best option?
A) Either the 15min parking located by the taxi stands in the very lower part or on Ocean View Road just before you get to the boat parking there is a few 2min parks. Both options are free but the road side ones are commonly taken.
Q) I want to drop someone off to the fullers boat, what is the best option?
A) On the left of the painted on roundabout side just before the main ferry building, there is about 4 drop off only parks. This is your best bet, if people are hogging these for pickups. There is normally a spot in some of the 2min parks.
Q) I am going to town for up to 24 hours taking my car, what is best spot to park?
A) Any of the paid 24 hour parking is fine, just note the lower section of the parking lot costs $3 more even though its only 20-30 metres closer in sections.
Q) I am going to town for up to 24 hours taking my motorbike, what is best spot to park?
A) There is a few motorbike dedicated squares around the two lower parking lots. From memory it is free to park, but they are not covered so your bike and seat will get wet.
Q) I am going to town taking my Pushbike/Ebike, what is best spot to park or can I take my bike?
A) As you walk down the main pier to the ferry there is some bike hoops on the right hand side, you can park your bike there for a few days no problems. I have seen the same bike there for like 2 years rusting out. Or you can take your bike/Ebike on the ferry at no extra cost.
Q) Where are the Waiheke Taxis located?
A) Just walk into the main carpark and there should be a few sitting there. This is about 150m from were you get off the boat. If there are none available you will have to call up one of the companies. Other options include Buses that run in conjunction with the boats.
Q) Where are the Waiheke Buses located?
A) Once you walk down pier to the road/drop off section, they should be on your right. The buses should have labelled what locations they are heading too, and you should even be able to find explorer buses and tour buses at set times the tour bus companies usually have a driver waiting at the pier with your surname if your booked with them, but if you are just popping up to Oneroa then I think all the standard buses stop there. Note buses only travel main roads and common roads so if you need to get to a remote accommodation you might be in for a small to large walk.
Q) I am going to town for a weekend that will be less than 48 hours, where can I park.
A) In the main carpark its not supported, you would have to park in the gravel free parking that is a 8min walk from the boat. We made a page on that. Matiatia Upper Car Park.
Q) I am going to town for 2+ days and need to park my car, where can I park?
A) Officially you are pretty stuffed, you would have to park 2-3km away on a side street and put on the walking shoes, or find a friend to drop you off or bus/taxi.
Q) I am a bad boy risk taker or have an emergency and want to park close for 2+ days what are my options?
A) People claim you can download the AT parking app and just keep paying for parking remotely and you can’t get ticketed because parking is paid and the system requires parking to be expired to place tickets on cars. Note: they could chalk tyres over time and potentially ticket you. But hey you took that risk. The other option if you have more dollars than sense is to just pay the fine. (We do not endorse or recommend these actions but unexpected events can happen and longer duration is needed so people need to be informed)
Q) How do I pay for my parking?
A) In each section you park in, there should be a close by Kiosk/Payment terminal. Or on the At parking app. One thing i would note is to make sure you find a Kiosk that is in the parking region you are in. I have been stung before as you park in the middle $3.50 carpark then walk towards the boat and find a terminal on the way and if you use one of the lower car park terminals you will be charged $6.50. Note: you can save 50 cents by using the app and not paying the added 50 cent fee.
